Operations Manager
Plextek is a leader in telematics systems supply, and through its Redtail Telematics outlet (www.redtailtelematics.com) is now building a substantial installed base in the UK and the USA. Redtail is at the beginning of its development; developments in the global telematics market (especially the young driver insurance market in the UK) means there is good potential for spectacular growth in this business.
We want to recruit an operations manager to support the rapid expansion of the business. You will join Redtail Telematics and be based in Plextek's offices in Great Chesterford.
Reporting to the Redtail Business Manager (RBM) the operations manager will be responsible for all aspects of service provision to existing and new customers. Duties will include:
- managing the set up and provision of equipment and services to new customers
– agreeing development and roll- out priorities with the RBM
– gathering new customer's requirements
– agreeing with the development team the introduction of any new data centre capabilities required by the customer
– managing the set up of telematics devices, SIMs, data centre services
– liaising with the new customer's staff to ensure a smooth roll-out.
- maintaining the agreed SLAs for existing customers
– providing day-to-day support to customers
– monitoring the quality of service provided
– identifying, organising and possibly taking any corrective actions needed.
This is the first position in our operations department; within 12 months we expect it to grow to three staff, and over 2 years to six staff. Depending on the abilities and performance of the person recruited, the opportunity exists for the person filling this role to become the manager of this team. However, in the short and medium term this will be a very "hands on" role.
To be successful in this role you will need to be a motivated self-starter who can take the initiative to make things happen in a fast moving, dynamic situation where there may be little precedent on which to base decisions. You will also need good customer management skills and a flexible approach to work.
You will have gained a good degree in a relevant technical subject and will have started your career in software development. After gaining several years' experience of IT and database systems together with an understanding of communications infrastructures, system management and security you will have moved into a more "operations" role. Your experience here will have demonstrated your ability to organise and manage issues through to completion, as well as your responsiveness and sensitivity to customers. Through your career you will have gained experience in the following:
- database operations and applications
- GSM network service and SIM management
- network management
- data security
- building cloud infrastructure-based services
- inter-operating between Windows and non-Windows platforms
- system level debugging in databases, software systems, networks and web services
OPERATIONS ENGINEER
We are looking to recruit an Operations Engineer to join our new venture company Telensa (www.telensa.com), the leading provider of Street Lighting Remote Control and Monitoring systems in the UK. Our system uses radio communications to link street lights back to a central database and web server in order to allow street lighting to be managed in a sophisticated and energy efficient way The role is a combination of an office role to ensure the Telensa networks are running okay and field based system installation, commissioning and customer support.
Once fully trained on the Telensa system you will be working in the operations group helping to understand customer requirements, plan, install and commission new systems and helping customers in the use of the system.
The role will be broad and will need someone who is prepared to get involved in a wide range of different engineering disciplines from radio system deployment to database and web software operation, and from practical hands on engineering in the field to the preparation of test and deployment documentation.
You are likely to have all, or at least many, of the following skills and experience:
- An engineering degree or similar qualification
- Experience of design, management or test of large IT systems
- Experience of design or deployment of communication infrastructure
- Customer support of IT or communications systems
Specific technical experience of the following area will be considered an advantage:
- Linux network management
- Database and web based systems (we use Firebird and apache)
- Radio systems design, planning or deployment
You will be:
- An enthusiastic team player, but be able to work independently
- Prepared to do what is required in a small start up company environment
- Be prepared to learn new skills as necessary

The job will involve visits to customer sites and may include international travel.
Database Administrator (DBA)
Plextek are looking to recruit a DBA. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic market leading company. The successful candidate will be responsible for the support of Microsoft SQL Server databases as well as the optimisation of various applications through the review and enhancements of various code, schema and process re-development.
To be considered for this role you will have the following skills and experience:
Essential:
- Expert Microsoft SQL Server Administration experience (2008 R2)
- Expert knowledge of performance monitoring and tuning
- Code review and enhancement
- Knowledge of T-SQL, Stored Procedures, etc.
Desirable:
- Experience of .NET
- Working knowledge of C# and ADO.net
- Working knowledge of IP based protocols

Embedded Software Engineer
We are looking to recruit an Embedded Software Engineer to join the software team within Plextek. The role requires all-round software development skills with the emphasis on embedded systems but also at application level.
You should have a technical degree or equivalent from a good university with experience of developing software in C and one or more of C++, C# and Java, in a real-time context. You should be comfortable developing software for a variety of platforms. In most cases this role will involve working with one or more software or hardware engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team. You may also participate in meetings with clients from time to time.
You will be self motivated, able to take the initiative in customer discussions, be an effective team player and have efficient time management skills enabling you to work well on your own.
You will have all of the following skills and abilities:
- Embedded application development experience
- Experience in embedded software in C
- Be able to communicate effectively
- Have a valid UK driving licence with no major endorsements
The following would also be an advantage:
- Working knowledge of C++, C# or Java
- Embedded Linux
- .NET
- Android

- Build systems, source control & defect tracking

Radar Software Development Engineer
We are looking to recruit a Software Development Engineer to join the Blighter radar team within Plextek. The Blighter radar is an advanced electronic surveillance device used to secure national borders and site perimeters.
The Radar Software Development Engineer will be a key member of the Blighter radar team with all-round software development skills; someone capable of contributing to the design and development of user interfaces and working on embedded systems at an application level.
You should have a technical degree or equivalent from a good university with experience of developing software in one or more of: C, C++, C# and Java, ideally in a real-time context. You should be comfortable developing software for a variety of platforms. You will be working in a small integrated team specifically focused on the Blighter radar but within the larger software development facility in Plextek. You will be expected to provide technical support to external customers so good spoken and written English skills are essential.
You will be self motivated, able to take the initiative in customer discussions, be an effective team player and have efficient time management skills enabling you to work well on your own.
You will have all of the following skills and abilities:
- Windows user interface development experience
- Embedded application development experience
- Use of one or more of C, C++, C# and Java

Radar Field Sales Engineer
We are looking to recruit a Field Sales Engineer to join the Blighter radar team within Plextek. The Blighter radar is an advanced electronic surveillance device used to secure national borders and site perimeters.
The Radar Field Sales Engineer will be a key member of the Blighter radar team providing support for Sales and Marketing activities including Proposal generation, trade exhibition support, field trials and customer demonstrations as well as a diverse range of technical and administrative activities necessary to support the smooth running of the team.
It is likely that you will have a technical degree, but significant experience in the military or security market is of equal value. Experience of radar technology and/or Electro-Optic systems is highly desirable. You will be working with a close-knit team but also working alone with customers both in the UK and abroad. As such you will be willing to travel and be responsible for representing Plextek and the Blighter team in a professional manner under sometimes difficult and challenging conditions. You must be able to communicate effectively, in particular having good spoken and written English skills.
You will be self motivated, able to take the initiative in customer discussions, be an effective team player and have efficient time management skills enabling you to work well on your own.
You will have all of the following skills and abilities:
- Able to design and/or critique the design of multi-sensor security systems that include radars, cameras, thermal imagers, communication systems and Command and Control (C2) stations.
- Able to understand the factors that influence the performance and function of radar systems or Electro-Optic systems
- Able to communicate detailed technical information about the sensor system with the Blighter team and our customers including System Integrators and end-users.
- Handle and respond to technical enquiries in a professional manner and with integrity
- Able to prepare customer facing documents including technical proposals (response to RFI, RFP and RFQs), compliancy matrices, technical sales publications including white papers and radar propagation analysis.
- Be organised, allowing you to handle a large number of potential customers as well as keeping the demonstration equipment in an orderly and well maintained fashion
- Able to staff exhibition stands and meet many new and diverse customers
- Equipment is reasonably heavy and generally requires installation on elevated platforms, therefore you should be prepared to help move equipment, and climb ladders etc.
- Able to design and build custom surveillance solutions. This includes system, mechanical, and electrical design, use of IT and Computer technology and the ability to clearly document the results
- Willingness and ability to travel overseas
- Have a valid UK driving licence with no major endorsements. Your licence should include category C1 vehicles (medium-sized vehicles e.g. large vans)
The following skills would also be an advantage:
- Use of and parameterisation of 'Radiomobile', a software application that is used for Radio/Radar propagation analysis
- Provide support on equipment training courses
- Willing and able to help the Blighter Sales and Marketing team with a diverse range of activities, often within challenging timescales and sometimes outside of normal working hours

RF Microwave IC Design Engineer
We are looking for an RF and microwave IC design engineer to join our RF IC group. You will ideally have experience in the design of MMICs in GaAs technology. However, applications are also invited from candidates with Si RF IC or component level microwave PCB/MIC design experience. Successful candidates would be expected to design in a range of technologies including:
- GaAs MMIC
- SiGe IC
- Multi-Chip Modules (MCMs)
- SMT based design at RF & microwave frequencies to component level
- RF and microwave PCB/MIC using various substrate technologies including HDI FR4, thick and thin-film ceramic, LTCC
Experience in some of the following areas would also be an advantage:
- Communications system design
- IC packaging technology
- RFOW test
- High power microwave amplifier design

User Interface/Web Developer
We are looking to recruit a User Interface/Web Developer to join our new venture company Telensa (www.telensa.com), now emerging as one of the leading providers of Street Lighting Remote Control and Monitoring systems. Our system uses radio communications to link street lights back to a central database and web server in order to allow street lighting to be managed in a sophisticated and energy efficient way
You will be working as part of a small close-knit team on the development of the web based user interface through which end users configure the street lighting system and analyse and interpret measured data from the street lights in order to optimise performance and minimise energy usage.
The environment is a Linux operating system running an apache/PHP web server. The user interface connects to a Firebird database and runs standard SQL queries. Externally there is also an interface through an ETL tool, Jitterbit, for interfacing to Asset Management Systems.
You are likely to have all, or at least many, of the following skills and experience:
- Education to degree level
- Experience of web based application development
- Experience of writing PHP
- Experience of interfacing to databases and writing SQL queries
Specific technical experience of the following areas will be considered an advantage (although not essential):
- Experience of using the Ext JS library

UK Sales Manager
Telensa is a dynamic new force in the emerging outdoor lighting control and monitoring market. Telensa has developed a complete Central Management System (CMS) for the remote control and monitoring of outdoor lighting. Marketed as PLANet (Public Lighting Active Network), the system is now established as the market leader in the UK and the UK's steady adoption of CMS means Telensa is also one of the key players in this market globally.
Based near Cambridge, Telensa was established in 2005 as a spinoff of Plextek, one of Europe's largest radio and communications systems design houses. Telensa is now looking to recruit a UK Sales Manager.
The UK Sales Manager role
Telensa is experiencing a period of rapid growth and is looking to recruit an ambitious and target driven individual to further develop sales within the UK street lighting sector.
Overall role
- To promote Telensa's products and solutions to new and existing customers;
- To present and demonstrate the features and benefits of PLANet CMS.
- To manage and develop sales accounts
Key duties and responsibilities
- Generate new opportunities through exhibitions, targeted phone and email introductions.
- Assist potential customers in modeling the business case Manage and deliver responses into tenders, coordinating internally with technical and engineering teams
- Assist with creating sales and marketing materials e.g. brochures, exhibitions, case studies etc.

You should have a technical degree or equivalent from a good university with experience of developing software in C and one or more of C++, C# and Java. You should be comfortable developing software for a variety of platforms. In most cases this role will involve working with one or more software or hardware engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team. You will be expected to participate in sales meetings with clients and be able to generate the technical responses to bids and tenders.
You will be self motivated, able to take the initiative in customer discussions, be an effective team player and have efficient time management skills enabling you to work well on your own.
You will have all of the following skills and abilities:
- Experience in embedded software in C
- Experience in Embedded Linux or Android Operating Systems and device driver development
- Embedded application development experience ideally on Linux and Android platforms
- Be able to communicate effectively
