RF Design Engineer
We are looking for an RF Design Engineer to join the Radio Group. Plextek Consulting develops a wide variety of products for clients. Think of anything with an antenna and it could be a project in which you will play a key part, from a consumer set top box to a radar system.
Following your good degree in electronics or physics, you will have had at least 2 years of professional experience in RF circuit design and be keen to join a dynamic team developing products and solutions for clients. You will be able to demonstrate basic analogue and RF circuit skills, with an understanding of PCB layout constraints.
Senior RF Design Engineer
We are looking for a Senior RF Design Engineer to join the Radio Group. Plextek Consulting develops a wide variety of products for clients. Think of anything with an antenna and it could be a project in which you will play a key part, from a consumer set top box to a radar system.
With a good degree in electronics or physics, you will have had at least 8 years of professional experience in RF circuit and system design and be keen to join a dynamic team developing products and solutions for clients. The role involves RF design, technical studies, client contact and occasional supervision of other engineers. The successful candidate will be outgoing and creative in looking for novel solutions to problems.
The role can involve project management to a greater or lesser degree in accordance with the successful candidate's preference.
Image Processing/Digital Signal Processing Engineer
Plextek is looking for an engineer with image processing experience to join our imaging team who are developing novel algorithms for a wide range of applications from medical to avionics. The role mixes algorithm exploration with implementation and integration on a number of different processor/hardware platforms. Although the position will be focussed on image processing we are also keen to hear from engineers with a more general digital signal processing background that have solid mathematical and implementation skills. The responsibilities of the role include identifying innovative solutions to customer problems, analysing and optimising the most appropriate mathematical approach and working with others to integrate the solution into a working system.
We would expect the successful candidates to have the following skills and experience:
- A good degree in engineering, maths or computer science
- C, C++ or an equivalent high level language
- 2+ years professional experience or post graduate research
- Knowledge of image processing techniques
- Algorithm exploration and implementation (possibly in a non-imaging area)
Specific technical experience of the following areas will be considered an advantage (although not essential):
- Real time system integration
- Matlab and Simulink
- PC based image processing and associated graphics technology
- Image processing areas such as analytics, enhancements and human factors
- A masters or PhD in a topic related to image processing

Business Development Consultant, Defence Group
Plextek provides a unique working environment for creative engineers, conducive to producing high quality work. The nature of the work we undertake gives exposure to a wide variety of clients and technologies, encompasses the whole product development cycle from inception through to manufacture and gives the opportunity to develop proprietary systems as well as work with standards-based products.
Our defence and security business is expanding and this role will be critical to the success of our aggressive development plans. As indicated in the White Paper 'National Security Through Technology', the delivery of novel technical solutions is critical to future defence and security strategy, and Plextek is well placed to exploit this opportunity.
Business development at Plextek is about selling a capability, rather than an existing product portfolio, so identifying possible opportunities demands a solid understanding of the technical issues involved in a potential application. In order to identify opportunities that fit the company's skill set, and to hold your own in discussions with technical specialists, you will need a degree in a relevant technical subject and some direct experience of product or system development.
Ideally you will have experience of business development for design services or bespoke systems in a defence systems environment. However, we would also be interested to hear from you if you are an engineer or technologist with a defence systems background and would like to make a move into business development. Experience of C4ISTAR systems would be of particular interest. Alternatively, if you have relevant business development experience in a non-defence domain, we would also like to hear from you.
In all cases, you must have a solid technical background, be well presented and have excellent communication skills.
Your responsibilities will be to:
- Seek out new business leads through networking at industry events and tradeshows, working your existing contacts and cold calling;
- Follow up opportunities by developing proposals and closing sales;
- Interact effectively with other internal departments, especially the technical teams, when engaging with clients and when handing over projects for execution;
- Keep abreast of issues affecting Plextek's defence and security markets;
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Defence Group business development strategy.
- Provide input on defence and security market requirements in technical planning meetings;
- Identify potential business partners for collaboration on large bids.

Business Development Manager
Plextek is a technology consultancy based south of Cambridge. We provide the following electronics and communications services to clients around the world:

We've also spun out product businesses successfully; over the last 5 years we have launched a wireless-controlled street lighting system, vehicle tracking systems and ground surveillance radar products. We want to use the growing profits from these activities to strengthen our technology consulting business. Consequently, we are looking for a top class business development professional to sell our innovative technology services to product managers and technical directors of major companies. The role will report to the Sales and Marketing Director.

Senior User Interface/Web Developer/Team Leader
We are looking to recruit Senior User Interface/Web Developers to join Telensa (www.telensa.com), the leading provider of Street Lighting Remote Control and Monitoring systems. Our system uses radio communications to link street lights back to a central database and web server in order to allow street lighting to be managed in a sophisticated and energy efficient way.
You will be working as part of a small close-knit team and giving technical and team leadership in the development of the web based user interface through which end users configure the street lighting system and analyse and interpret measured data from the street lights in order to optimise performance and minimise energy usage.
The environment is a Linux operating system running an apache/PHP web server. The user interface connects to a Firebird database and runs standard SQL queries. There are external interfaces to a growing number of Asset Management Systems exchanging data through xml file transfer and SOAP interfaces.
You will be using the latest techniques to add major new functionality to the system including high performance mapping, mobile apps, new graphical control functions and so on to help us maintain our position of technical leadership within this new industry.
The role also involves the management of a small team and, for the right candidate, could include their line management.
We would expect the successful candidates to have the following skills and experience:
- A good degree

- Strong skills in PHP development
- Experience of interfacing to databases (not necessarily Firebird) and writing SQL queries

Database Developer
We are looking to recruit a database developer to join our new venture company Telensa (www.telensa.com), the leading provider of Street Lighting Remote Control and Monitoring systems. Our system uses radio communications to link street lights back to a central database and web server in order to allow street lighting to be managed in a sophisticated and energy efficient way.
The role covers a variety of database development including development of the central database application and interfacing this database to a variety of external processes written in different languages. The role will also require ad hoc manipulation of data from external sources into required formats. Additionally, Telensa has a number of internal administrative databases that require further development. Whilst the main part of the role is for database and interface software development, there will also be plenty of opportunity to get involved in other aspects of software development for the successful candidate.
You are likely to have all, or at least many, of the following skills and experience:
- A good engineering/software engineering degree
- Several years database development experience in a variety of environments
- Experience of interfacing databases with external software
- Experience of 'C' program development
- Programming/development within a Linux environment

Junior Technician
Blighter Surveillance Systems (BSS), part of the Plextek Group, sells remote sensing products for border surveillance and perimeter security type applications. Our key product is the Blighter radar system that can remotely detect a walking person to distances over 10km. See http://www.blighter.com/ . In order to promote and sell systems based around the Blighter radar we provide live demonstrations of the system, both in the UK and overseas.
We are looking for a Junior Technician to support the BSS sales and technical team from our offices south of Cambridge. Your role will be to provide technical assistance to our small team, plus general housekeeping and administration tasks in support of demonstrations, exhibitions and other team activities. Technical assistance may include preparing equipment for demonstrations, packing and shipping, preparation of exhibition equipment, radar health checks, basic fault diagnosis and configuration, organising equipment stores and ensuring damaged/unserviceable equipment is repaired.
We are looking for a person who can demonstrate enthusiasm and aptitude for this generally technical role. We will not expect you to have much knowledge of radar or other sensors, but we hope that you will be able to demonstrate a technical capability especially relating to electronics and/or computers.
The equipment we sell is technically complex and is typically installed in site security systems costing millions of Pounds. Therefore you need to be a logical thinker and self-organised to ensure that you can support the team effectively.
Once you have acquired a good knowledge of the Blighter equipment then we will eventually expect you to support the team on remote demonstrations both in the UK and abroad. Travel destinations may include Europe, USA, Middle East and Asia Pacific region. At any time you may be meeting our customers and so you will need to represent BSS in a professional and presentable manner. Note that our equipment is typically installed in remote locations and often on the top of masts.
The job will require reasonable communication skills in order to coordinate the movement of equipment and help with demonstrations. A UK driving licence is highly desirable to allow you to provide off-site support to the team.
Key requirements:
- GCSEs in at least English Language and Mathematics
- 'A' Level or equivalent in at least one science, maths or engineering subject
- IT competent (e.g. use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- An aptitude for technology. e.g. Build your own computer, maintain your car, make/fix things
- Capable of being involved in occasional lifting/movement of equipment that might weigh in excess of 25kgs
- A willingness and capability to travel overseas
