Radars found 'that can ignore wind farms'

A new style of radar has been tested which can be used close to wind farms, something which has resulted in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) being able to cancel its objections to several proposed projects.

The MoD has announced that SERCO had installed and tested a Lockheed Martin TPS-77 Air Defence Radar at Trimingham on the Norfolk coast, with the device working well.

As a result, it has now been able to scrap its objections to the construction of five offshore wind farms in the area.

There are currently several projects around the UK which have been put on hold or shelved due to military concerns, as the spinning blades of the wind turbines can disrupt the radar signals.

A new radar was recently installed in Southend Airport, replacing the existing model that had been used on the site for over 30 years.

The new dual channel ATCR-33SE from Selex is now in place and will be fully operational by March 2012.
