3D printing 'has applications for surgery'

The development of 3D printing devices could have a range of benefits to the medical sector, with surgery in particular set to see an improvement in the number of procedures that can be performed.

Commenting on the development of the technology, Brian Withers, managing director of 3dcreationlab.co.uk, explained the system can be particularly effective for people who have sustained complex injuries from a car accident or on the battlefield.

"You can print out a person's skull structure from an MRI scan and create in CAD [computer aided design] a prosthetic to fit in perfectly," Mr Withers explained.

He said that by using this procedure it can help to minimise the trauma that the patient would experience with invasive surgery.

The development of new medical devices is seeing increasingly small products coming on to the market, with the Lifestyle Connect device recently unveiled by ZOMM, which will fit on to a keyring and connect with mobile phones.
