£180m shaved off 4G bill

The upcoming 4G spectrum auction has been a hot topic for some time now - not least because of the huge costs involved in leasing the 800MHz frequency.

However, the government has offered a lifeline to mobile network operators who will be incorporating 4G electronic design into their products and services.

It will shave off £180 million form the cost of acquiring spectrum bandwidth.

The reduction will be used to offset the cost of dealing with interference problems, which could affect as many as 900,000 digital terrestrial TVs and set-top boxes.

The 800MHz spectrum has been shown to interfere with digital television signals in some areas and mobile network providers are expected to deal with any such issues before they launch services.

Communications minister Ed Vaizey is hopeful that disruption will be kept to a minimum during the rollout.
