Plextek's design expertise helps PneumaCare to receive double award win at 2011 Medical Futures Innovation Awards - 9/6/2011
Plextek today announced that PneumaCare has won two highly sought after healthcare and business accolades at the Medical Futures Innovation Awards – a Dragon’s Den-style assessment of new healthcare ideas from around the world. PneumaCare’s PneumaScan™ device, which monitors patients breathing without any contact with their body, received Best Business Proposition Award within the Respiratory Innovation Category. The company was also named Overall Best Business Proposition within the Medical Futures Special Awards category at this week’s awards ceremony in London.
Plextek has collaborated with PneumaCare since its formation, contributing ideas, strategic consultancy and supporting the design of a working prototype to help prove the concept. Plextek has since worked on further technology development as PneumaCare commercialises the concept and looks at other potential applications. The collaboration has enabled PneumaCare to hit the key commercial milestones of Medical Regulatory approvals within the challenging schedule and budget requirements. Receiving the Medical Futures awards is a fantastic independent validation of the potential of PneumaCare’s business proposition.
PneumaScan™ is a revolutionary technology based on novel 3D imaging technology first developed by the University of Cambridge, UK. Clinical and commercial use of PneumaScan™ is about to start at Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals in Cambridge, Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Plextek has a track record for delivering high quality, rapid and reliable healthcare design services (including industrial design, embedded software, analogue and digital hardware design, design for manufacture and rapid prototyping) to support companies with the development of electronic products for medical devices, diagnostics devices, telemedicine systems and biotechnology equipment. The company’s experience in medical device design and its knowledge of regulatory affairs means that all work is carried out to the highest quality and in full accordance with appropriate international standards.
About PneumaCare
PneumaCare is a Cambridge (UK)-based company providing clinicians with diagnostic and monitoring equipment of respiratory disease using novel 3D imaging technology. The Company’s first PneumaScan™ product family are revolutionary non–contact respiratory monitoring systems providing richer information to a broader patient population. PneumaScan™ has clinical applications in a number of medical environments because patients can be assessed while breathing naturally or performing spirometric manoeuvres without the need to breathe into, interact with, or contact the measuring device. Non-contact assessments also reduce risk of infection and instrument running costs.
The PneumaScan™ instrument has been developed by PneumaCare Limited in partnership with Cambridge University, Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge and Plextek Limited. PneumaCare has been funded by its Founders, Cambridge Enterprise, Cambridge Capital Group and individual business angels as well as grant and contracts from the East of England Development Agency and UK Ministry of Defence.

About Medical Futures
The Medical Futures Awards are run on a not-for-profit basis to help turn ideas into tangible real-world solutions to improve clinical outcomes for patients and provide cost-saving benefits.
The Awards started in 2001 and since then, past winners have secured over £100m in funding, and most importantly many have gone onto become successful services or products that are now changing peoples’ lives.
By entering the awards, front line clinicians, scientists, and entrepreneurs have the chance to pitch their ideas and businesses to a world-class panel of experts whose advice, guidance and peer-review brings unparalleled validation.
From thousands of entries, the top 100 teams were invited to pitch to Dragon’s Den style judging panels of some of the world’s most distinguished and respected doctors, scientists and commercial experts, including the likes of Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director of the NHS and Professor Martin Rothman, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Medtronic Inc.
The Medical Futures judging is a completely transparent process of peer review in which the winners are chosen based on three criteria: novelty, viability and benefits to patient care.
