Broadband Mesh Network

A mesh network

Plextek has undertaken extensive system and product design in the development of a highly innovative broadband Radio access network. The system employs a "Mesh" network of point-to-point microwave links between "Nodes" at customer premises, forming a distributed trunking network over which voice and data services are routed using ATM technology .

Following the initial conceptual thought that a mesh structure could potentially overcome some of the disadvantages of a traditional point to multi point network the system development was undertaken in a number of steps:-

  • Analysis to explore and quantify the potential Mesh advantages
  • Develop the simulations to gradually include physical radio constrains
  • Propagation measurements
  • Re simulation and modification of system design
  • Detailed radio analysis
  • Build demo system
  • Produce system specifications
  • Build and test hardware and software

The work led to the implementation of a successful trial Mesh network operating at 28GHz and offering broadband wireless access to residential properties.
