Dr Graham Maile, director of strategic consulting
with the technology specialists Plextek, has been appointed chairman of the
UK third Generation Advisory Group (UKTAG) - a body which advises the Government
on policy matters relating to the definition, standardisation and implementation
of new mobile systems. This summer, the Government will issue up to five
licences
for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks, which will
deliver services such as high speed internet access, video conferencing and
video telephony. “Mobile multimedia, enabled by UMTS, is set to be one of
the major telecoms themes of the first decade of the new millennium”, commented
Dr. Maile. “With UMTS licensing and technology standardisation moving ahead
rapidly, 1999 will be an exciting year”.
