Protecting the environment:
Plextek explains new European legislation for electronic products
Liability
for the environmental impact of electronic products (from toys to computers)
will face many companies in 2004 as new European rules come into force. Yet
many companies, in particular small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs), know
little about the significance that this legislation will have on any organisation
that incorporates electronic components into its products.
Designers, manufacturers, retailers
and suppliers of electronics will all need to prepare for the introduction
of this impending legislation. Dave Burrell, senior technology consultant,
from Plextek - one of the largest independent electronics design houses in
Europe - will advise companies on the implications of the legislation as
part
of the Southern Manufacturing & Southern Electronics 2003 technical seminars
programme (19 and 20 February 2003).
During a one hour session on Wednesday,
19 February, Dave will explain ways in which SMEs can prepare themselves for
the new legislative environmental requirements, based on the ability to recycle
or reuse components and materials. Since a company's product design could
in future be monitored for power usage, product life cycle and materials usage,
Dave will help explain how to minimise the possibly of punitive charges that
could be levied for non-compliance.
The Southern Manufacturing & Southern Electronics 2003 technical seminars
programme is organised by the Manufacturing Advisory Service South East.
The seminars address innovation,
design, production, quality control and impending Government and legislative
issues.
