Design for Manufacture and New Product Introduction (NPI)
Design for Excellence

Plextek is able to offer a complete design service that enables the client
to take an idea from concept to production. The design approach of Design
For Excellence (DFX) is well established in the company's design culture,
and allows Plextek to develop the overall product design to suit the predicted
product volumes and the client's manufacturing facility.
DFX includes PCB layout analysis,
used to ease both manufacture and test of the populated boards, the study
of the mechanical assembly through Design for Manual Assembly
(DFMA), and finally through to Design for Environment.
As a result of the quantity, variety
and complexity of projects undertaken by Plextek, the design team has built
up a wealth of production and design for production experience. This experience
enables Plextek engineers to rapidly identify and eliminate potential design/manufacturing
issues, which reduces the number of design iterations and provides rapid product
development.
Whilst this DFX approach is standard
on Plextek projects, this service can be contracted by a client, to possibly
provide an independent third party assessment on a design prior to product
launch, or where the client has limited engineering resource and requires
support and/or additional skills.
New Product Introduction (NPI)
Plextek's success in rapid NPI
is founded on effective concurrent engineering within the various disciplines
of the project team. With this approach however, Plextek goes one stage further
by extending the concept to include the contract electronics manufacturer.
The purpose is to have good information flow during the whole process development
and to ensure that the needs of the contract electronics manufacturer and
of the design team are clearly understood. Plextek strongly promote this
technique
as "best practice" on all our design/development projects, and
the success in rapid time to market clearly supports this approach. We are
also
able to offer this support as an independent service and our manufacturing
engineers are available to help to manage all aspects of the transfer of
the
design to production: -
- Supplier development
- Process development
- Test strategy
- Data transfer
- BOM transfer
