Plextek’s flexible test system allows for accurate assessment of phase noise. The level that can be measured is far lower than that which can be achieved using a conventional spectrum analyser. The design uses a phase locked system to convert the noise sidebands of the unit under test directly to baseband. The baseband signal is sampled via a fast A/D converter and logged as a data file for offline analysis.

The data file can be imported to Mathcad for analysis using our example code. The data can also be used to provide scaled plots of phase noise at various frequency offsets. The software provided is also capable of indicating any spurious signals that may be present in the measured spectrum. Overall these features give a system that is effective during both the product development and during manufacturing test. Plextek is able to offer the existing equipment as a starting point for our engineers to develop a custom phase noise measurement system that would be supplied with full user documentation.
