THE ROLE

What We Are Offering

This is a final call for one additional intern to join the two already appointed for this summer. We are looking for a talented student studying electronics, physics or software currently in the 2nd or 3rdyear of their degree. The internship is paid and normally lasts 10 weeks during July to September.

All students MUST have a minimum of 5 years’ permanent residency in the UK and be able to obtain security clearance.

Please supply a CV and indicate in your covering letter why you are interested in the position and what motivates you in the field that you are studying. Please also state whether you would like to be interviewed for Electronics or Embedded Software (see the skillset requirements below).

What You Could Be Doing During Your Summer Work Placement

There are many different project choices, so we offer a project that is tailored to the specific skills of the successful applicant. Guidance, support and supervision will be provided by experienced senior engineers, although the student should show willingness to be self-motivated, and have the ability to work on his or her own initiative wherever possible.

Examples of previous student projects include:

  • Phase noise measurement system
  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data capture and processing design
  • Configurable radar test target
  • Vehicle counting technology
  • Inertial navigation device

Skills Required

The interview will be tailored to your degree and any stated experience. Please state in your application which of the two skillsets are most relevant to your knowledge and aspirations.

Electronics Skillset

An understanding of all or some of the following is required:

  • Analogue/RF electronics
  • A/D conversion principles
  • Filter theory and fundamentals of control loops.
  • Some understanding of digital principles and/or software skills (preferably C) would also be beneficial.

Embedded Software Skillset

  • Knowledge of microcontrollers/system-on-chip devices
  • Coding skills: C or C++
  • General electronics
  • A/D conversion principles
  • An understanding of the role of digital signal processing and low level software in modern electronics would also be beneficial.

Established in 1989, we have evolved from a pure ‘design house’ into an international multidisciplinary consultancy. We employ 70 people at our UK laboratory and office complex and utilise factories in the UK and Far East to manufacture products.

The majority of our staff are degree qualified, and a number also have higher degrees. We have grown from a staff of 3 to 70 and are now one of the leading consultancies in our field.

One of our specialties is in the design of radio communication and radar systems, although the work we undertake is actually a mix between radio frequency electronics, analogue electronics, digital electronics, signal processing and embedded software. Most projects involve a mixture of hardware and software.

In the longer term there are parallel paths for career progression at Plextek, so progress can be made in purely technical as well as project management and commercial roles.

Embedded Software Engineer

We are looking to recruit experienced Embedded Software Engineers to join the software team within Plextek and support our latest client developments. The role requires all-round software development skills with the emphasis on embedded operating systems and applications. This will cover the development of software for a range of embedded platforms from bare metal microcontrollers to RTOS and embedded Linux systems. Given the breadth of work undertaken at Plextek the ability to quickly learn new languages and skills is essential, so as to contribute across the range of the group’s activities.

With software playing a key role in nearly all leading-edge applications of technology, our software engineers are involved across the whole range of development projects undertaken by Plextek. In most cases, our roles involve working with other software or hardware engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

You will be expected to participate in sales and project meetings with clients and be able to generate the technical responses to bids and tenders.

You should have a technical degree or equivalent from a good university. You should be comfortable developing software for a variety of platforms.

You will:

  • Be an enthusiastic team player, but be able to work independently
  • Be prepared to learn new skills quickly in order to react to changing demands
  • Have good communications skills
  • Have good organisation skills
  • Developing real-time software in C
  • Experience with debugging and optimising embedded code: finding problems and bottlenecks and fixing them

One or more of the following areas of domain experience (or similar) is also desirable:

  • Familiarity with software-hardware interfacing

  • Python, Perl, C++, C#, Objective C, Java, Bash/other scripting languages

In this role, you will be developing embedded Linux board support packages and kernel device drivers, and developing real-time software for embedded Linux targets. Typical projects use customised hardware based on reference designs such as the Beaglebone Black and Avnet PicoZed. You will design and implement custom Linux distros comprising board support packages, device drivers and application software for real-time embedded systems such as radars, radio base stations and remote telemetry sensors.

In-depth knowledge and proven experience in embedded Linux board support and application development is essential, and experience of writing Yocto recipes is highly desirable. You should have a technical degree or equivalent from a good university. You should be comfortable developing software for a variety of platforms and pushing the boundaries of your capabilities.

There are customer-facing aspects to the role, so you must be comfortable participating in sales and project meetings with clients, and able to generate the technical responses to bids and tenders.
