Factory Test System Implementation

Factory Testing System

Factory test has a significant impact on product cost and production performance. Inefficient test processes and test failures increase production time and directly affect build costs. This can restrict production capacity or drive unnecessary investment in additional test equipment.

Product design has a major influence on factory test, along with target production volumes and specific market requirements (such as safety or RF emissions testing).

Plextek considers test strategy from the product concept phase onwards. We do this so that the appropriate strategy can be developed and the correct detailed design for test (DFT) decisions can be made at the earliest opportunity. Often the target manufacturer will be involved in this activity where there are benefits from, or requirements for, using existing factory equipment or processes.

This early consideration of test access is particularly important with RF designs. Where test access may be limited due to the need for product RF screening or assembled PCB level testing before unit final assembly, we account for the provision of antennas and any subsequent assembled unit tests that may be required.

We are able to design, supply and support custom test solutions ranging from simple, manual, bench-top PCB or assembled product test fixtures, through to fully automated systems that can test millions of units. Plextek has a proven history in the provision of systems at both ends of that volume and test system complexity scale.

For high volume products destined for large, often offshore production, test systems have to be robust, easily replicated and supportable remotely. When selecting sub-contractors, the ease at which we can rapidly provide test systems support is always an important consideration; this has proven to be invaluable as the introduction of new product variants or updates always requires timely changes to test processes.

We also create custom test equipment for low volume but technically demanding products. In these cases, extensive testing (a procedure often lasting days), results processing and analysis can still be automated to aid repeatability and ensure consistency with the customer’s design specifications.

Closely aligned with factory test is Plextek’s ability to provide factory control and database systems that synchronise all of the necessary manufacture and test system components, including product data management at all stages of testing, packing and shipping. This gives our clients complete control of every aspect of the manufacturing cycle, from adjusting volume production requirements to accommodate a wider number of product variants through to the management of product distribution to multiple global client customers. Alternatively, when required, test equipment supplied by us can be integrated with existing third party factory planning and control systems.
