Generating innovative ideas

Research and Development

Continual research and development into new technologies and concepts is required to provide the technological advancement our military forces require to maintain battlefield superiority. To achieve this, our defence specialists are actively involved within the science and technology (S&T) community. Engagement can take many forms, predominantly covering technology readiness levels (TRLs) 1 to 6, that is ideas creation, conceptual designs, laboratory and field demonstrators, and initial prototyping. Whilst at the same time our production engineering team keeps us mindful of design-for-supply principles.

We have a proven track record of generating innovate ideas and delivering against them; for example, having successfully delivered over 20 projects into the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl), Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) initiative since 2013.

Likewise we’re a recognised provider of proof of principle demonstrators into Dstl and UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) such as into the Autonomous Systems Underpinning Research (ASUR) and Maritime Collaborative Enterprise (MarCE) programmes. We are also registered suppliers into a wide range of Research Frameworks into Dstl (R-Cloud, EW & Cyber); MoD (Framework Agreement for Technical Services (FATS), Niteworks); and other government agencies (BluelightWorks). We are a trusted partner providing technology led innovation into defence industry, working with Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Systems Integrators, and Prime Contractors to enhance their knowledge and market offering.

Recent highlights of our work includes:
CDE: Affordable space-based capabilities; Agile, immersive mission training; Highly robust ground platforms; Persistent surveillance from the air; and a sensor system to detect damage to ceramic armour. Dstl: mm-wave (60GHz) non-line of sight (NLOS) communications and micro-radar to enable small unmanned air systems (sUAS) to operate in urban environments. SME: A feasibility study for an inherently safe, long-range laser inhibitor. OEM: Development of a body-worn, high-accuracy, low-drift dead-reckoning system to enable GNSS-degraded as well as GPS-denied operations.
