Precision Instrumentation

Capit-All is an instrument to remove and replace screw caps on 96- and 24-format storage tubes with precision and ease. Working as part of The Automation Partnership (TAP) team the instruments robust design ensures reliable, high throughput access and storage of samples.

The instrument allows increased laboratory throughput and improved ergonomics by capping or decapping up to 96 tubes at once (in approximately 10 seconds/rack). With the addition of spacers enables use with 500 µl or 1.0 ml tube racks on the same instrument and maintain seal integrity with pre-determined torque control. Safety features ensure that racks are loaded in the correct orientation, as well as prevent cross threading or overtightening of caps. A drip tray prevents cross contamination of samples during entry and removal.

The instrument is designed to be cleaned and maintained without disassembly and the simple, four-button user interface enables laboratory personnel of any level to operate the instruments with minimal training.

Ambulatory ECG Monitoring - Real time vital signs monitoring

Ambulatory ECG Monitoring

Challenge:
Our client wanted to develop a battery powered ambulatory device to obtain electrocardiogram (ECG) information from an adult patient. The technology would then transmit the ECG information to a server for data analysis. Their vision of monitoring vital signs of ambulatory patients in real-time and transmitting data via the Wireless Medical Telemetry System frequencies required consideration of multiple data analysis functions. Data recorded would need to indicate accurate readings of heart rate determination, R-wave detection, ECG filtering and arrhythmia recognition.

Approach:
The indoor wireless networks in hospitals, it was discovered, were inherently unreliable due to reflective equipment. Solid walls, beds and wards caused interference with existing band signals and this presented a significant challenge as complete reliability needed to be ensured when utilising the frequencies. The solution incorporated multiple antennas being installed to ensure communication with tele-packs. A new bespoke system was introduced including, radios, signal processing, software and a new secure band level for our technology. Plextek assisted with the development throughout, from concept to end manufacture.

Outcome:
The product has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration for use in the USA with one third of all US hospitals implementing the monitoring solution in practice. The bespoke system was inherently designed to facilitate the holistic healthcare approach by allowing multiple patients monitoring. Based on one device per patient, the band width allows for up to 189 patients to be monitored at any given time.
