“I hope that the students will get a better sense of the breadth and variety of career paths in technology and the feeling that they really can go on to do this in the future if they want to!” Vicky
Plextek will be joining organisations from across the UK at the Amex Stadium in Brighton for the TeenTech Festival.
The event welcomes 300 Year 8 and 9 students from the region, giving them the chance to take part in hands-on science, engineering, and technology activities designed to broaden their understanding of future career paths.
Heading up the team on the day, Vicky Larmour, SVP of Engineering at Plextek, said: “Attending the TeenTech Festival is a win-win opportunity for us! We get to help inspire and educate young people, while at the same time their enthusiasm and curiosity make it such fun for us!”
As part of the day, Plextek will be setting a challenge centered around drone technology. “We will be giving the students the challenge of optimising the payload on a drone – looking to achieve accurate location wayfinding even when GPS is compromised, degraded or unavailable, while not overburdening the drone design in terms of physical payload weight and cost,” explained Vicky. “We will also be sending an engineer with a very broad background experience to act as an ambassador and accompany a group of students around the event to help them get the most out of all the different activities on offer.”
TeenTech plays an important role in showing students the breadth of opportunities within science, technology, and engineering. By highlighting the variety of career paths, young people gain a clearer view of how their skills and interests can translate into future roles. Vicky continued, “I’m a firm believer in ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’. If students don’t grow up seeing ‘people like me’ in a range of roles and careers, then they may never explore some of those options for themselves and their talent is missed.
“It’s really hard when you’re at school to know or understand what the diversity of different career paths could involve. The more options they can see, the better chance they have of finding something that resonates with them. Whether they end up deciding to focus their educational choices down a particular path or keep their options open, at least they’re making those choices with their eyes open to what the opportunities could be.
“I hope that the students will get a better sense of the breadth and variety of career paths in technology and the feeling that they really can go on to do this in the future if they want to!”
We chose to participate in TeenTech as we believe these events are vital in opening doors and ensuring that tomorrow’s workforce has the inspiration, confidence, and opportunity to thrive. If you’re interested in a career at Plextek, visit our Careers page, or reach out to our team:
